Road-Con was retained by the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) to rehabilitate one of two active runways at the Cape May Airport. The project was phased to allow for short runway usage while diverting most traffic to the other runway, which remained in service. Our scope of work included “profile” milling of the existing runway surface to remove existing undulations. While prior contractors performing this item of work utilized a vast series of grade marks and stringlines, our survey team recorded extensive surface elevations prior to the start of work, and using the design documents, developed an electronic 3D model of the surface. This data was uploaded into our milling machine’s 3D system control, which was provided by Topcon. With millimeter control instruments locked in on satellites placed adjacent to the runway, the mill provided the varying depth cut required for the surface. Next, existing joints and cracks were opened with a smaller mill and received sealant and patching. Finally, a 2-inch Superpave Wearing Course was installed following by transverse grooving and striping for aircraft safety.
